Containment: what about mobile use?

During this time of crisis, the government has intensified its efforts to end this coronavirus pandemic. Citizens, for their part, confined to their homes have found new ways to use mobile.

The increase in time spent on mobile.

As the coronavirus pandemic persisted and the government took strict measures to limit it, consumers still confined to their homes found new ways to use their mobile devices to continue their lives normally: shopping, checking their accounts, keep fit, entertain…

Before confinement, the time spent daily on mobiles increased during the first quarter of 2020. In China, the time spent daily increased by 30%, or 5 hours per day every day. France saw a 15% growth in time spent on applications. Worldwide, the average weekly time spent on apps and games on Android phones increased 20% year-over-year in the first quarter of 2020.

We also notice a growth in the number of expenditures, consumption and downloads. Indeed, in Q1, consumers spent more than $23.4 billion via shopping apps, the largest quarter on record in terms of consumer spending. There were also more than 31 billion new app downloads, a 15% increase from Q4 2019.

This therefore confirms that today, with the pandemic, mobile and web users spend a lot more time on mobile applications and mobile sites.

We also note a growth in the number of consumer spending and downloads. Indeed, in Q1, consumers spent more than $23.4 billion via shopping apps, the largest quarter on record in terms of consumer spending. There were also more than 31 billion new app downloads, a 15% increase from Q4 2019.

Consumers downloaded 22.5 billion new apps from Google Play in the first quarter of 2020.

Downloads on the Google Play Store increased by 5% over one year to reach 22.5 billion in the first quarter of 2020. On the Apple Store side, downloads increased by 15% over 12 months to reach 9 billion new downloads for this same quarter.

Google Play Store: India and Brazil were the two largest markets for downloads in Q1 2020. In terms of growth, Brazil, India and Vietnam were the biggest drivers of change compared to Q4 2019.

Apple Store: China and the United States were the two largest markets in terms of downloads, as well as the main drivers of this quarter-over-quarter growth.

Categories: - Games, tools and entertainment categories were more important in terms of downloads on Google Play store. The games category was the main driver of downloads from one quarter to the next on the Google Play store, however, on the Apple Store, we observe consumer behavior changing and moving towards categories that are often less frequented. - The health, fitness, education and business categories all saw strong growth in downloads, 40% for health, 35% for education and 30% for business.

Populations having had to review their ways of working and studying have been fond of videoconferencing platforms. Tools such as ZOOM, Microsoft Teams, and Hangouts Meet have been adopted and these companies have seen their demands increase. In order to quickly position themselves as leaders, the various players have set up free trial periods for their consumers and presented them with their remote meeting mode offers.

- The games, photo and video and entertainment categories remained the most important categories in terms of downloads on iOS. The games category was the main driver. Unlike Google Play Store where education, business, health and fitness saw the highest growth rate from one quarter to the next.

To conclude, we notice through this crisis that mobile, applications, mobile sites appear to be an essential lever. Indeed, many companies have been able to face this crisis thanks to digital technology. We also notice that digital technology makes it possible to dematerialize a certain number of things and therefore to respond to ecological issues. In addition, depending on the strategies put in place, you will be able to target new prospects and expand your customer portfolio.
